25 people in a P.E. Hiace

The taxi system in Port Elizabeth is the absolute business.

I got here after a 9 hour drive from Cape Town on Saturday passing through the famous Garden route. Saw some bitching ostriches and quite a lot of pretty landscapes too. I must have passed about 500 people along the sides of the road trying to hitch-hike to the next town. It was quite touching though as they’d hold up apples and oranges to try and entice you to pick them up. The Europcar Kia Picanto didn’t really have that much room though so I just kept truckin. Truth be told you could easily spend at least a week doing this route, but unfortunately I was just focused on making it to Port Elizabeth before darko see England take on USAAA.

I had a quick stopover for Lunch in Knysna which is the town where the France and Denmark teams are being put up. No sign of any of the Frenchies though, they were probably too busy bickering and trying to work out who to blame after their turgid 0-0 draw in Cape Town on Friday night. Aside from the Henry-baiting and the spectacle of being in Cape Town’s Green Point stadium, in footballing terms there’s very little positive to say about the game. Ribery and Forlan were the only ones who even looked like they could kick into gear, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

I’m staying with a wacky homosexual couple here in P.E. They guys run a small hostel 10 minutes outside of the city centre. They’re absolutely hilarious and have 2 dogs, a lame cat and a photo collage of “Brian’s 40th birthday” in the hallway. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the Port Elizabeth fanzone which is great. I can only imagine how quiet the area would be if the World Cup wasn’t on as the city has a real air of an old seaside town in winter. The overcast weather of the last 48 hours hasn’t really helped but thankfully hasn’t dampened spirits of the locals who are all stupidly happy to be part of this Wooooorld Cooop BAFANA BAFANA eeeeeh yaaa! They’ve really put in the effort though with lots of added security, shuttle buses to and from the stadium and plenty of friendly faces happy to answer any questions. I wish however they could have experienced our BIG FREEZE 2010, as everyone is saying how incredibly cold and nasty the weather is, and yet I’m still in my green hoodie and jeans. This is warmer than most of our Irish summer!

I took a walk around on Sunday to avoid watching Algeria and Slovenia and ended up down in the city’s boardwalk complex. This is a big holiday village along the beachfront. With the evening chill setting in (hits around 5pm, coming up to their shortest day round these parts!), I decided to get a taxi back to the fanzone in time to eat and watch the Germans take on Australia. I think there’s only 25 cabs operating in the city, and the rest of the city’s transport needs are served by a complex system of minibus taxis. To understand them properly, they really need to be experienced. You’re walking down the street and you hear a whistle and see “a conductor” hanging out of the side window of a white van shouting something like “Greenacres, eh eh!”. You hop in and pay the going rate of 5ZAR which is about 60c in proper money, and they take you to your destination. Sounds simple, right? Of course, nothing could be quite so easy.

The journey may  involve pulling into a petrol-station for diesel or swapping minibus a few times at any of the city’s un-official terminals. And of course, they’re gloriously over-crowded. In order to speak to the media accurately in the potential “Irish football fan loses leg and wallet after taxi turns over” story that I was drafting in my mind, I took a quick headcount on one of my trips. The result? 25 PEOPLE. IN A HIACE. This included 7 children, 6 middle-aged women, 5 infants, 4 old dudes, the driver, the “conductor” and the one and only whitey, yours truly. It took a while and the constant stopping and starting would presumably lose its novelty value after a while, but it’s perfectly safe and I figured if we did crash, the fact we were so compacted would mean we’d all just absorb any impact. The worst that could happen would be a baby going flying out the back window.

Broadband or Wifi don’t seem to be very prevelant here so I’ll upload some pictures and other thoughts from the last few days once I get to Durban tomorrow. A group from our hostel went to the Addo National Park yesterday and hung out with some pretty awesome elephants, so there’s some great shots of them even if the rhinos and lions weren’t arsed coming out to see us. Plus the designated SAFE FUN AREAS that are the Fifa Fan Zones are gas, so will try to pictorially explain that experience a bit too.

It’s going to be a hectic 24 hours coming up for me. I’m attending Portugal V Ivory Coast in Port Elizabeth this afternoon, then I hope to find a solitary North Korea fan in the fanzone as Kim Jong II’s boys take on a lot of people’s favourites for the tournament, Brazil. Tomorrow I will fly to Durban to see Spain take on Switzerland. Seeing Spain in the flesh is going to be great as they are one of the few teams who still manage to live up to the entertainment expectations. And the potential chances of seeing Ronaldo, Deco, Drogba and his broken arm, Kalou, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa AND Philippe Senderos in the flesh over the next 2 days is pretty mouth-watering.

And with the weather meant to be hitting 25* over the weekend,  Durban aint gonna be a bad place to try to survive the depths of a killer African winter either…

The calm before the storm [and a creepy Ally McCoist “encounter”…]

OK, I’m lying so it’s not at all calm.

I’ve nipped in off of Cape Town’s Long Street to an internet cafe for a while as it’s pretty deafening between the continuous drone of vuvuzelas and a wrath of accompanying car horns. This type of atmosphere would usually be reserved for a victory parade but Bafana Bafana have been waiting a long time for this, so you’ve got to forgive them for getting a little excited on the eve of the opening ceremony! Latest word is that Nelson Mandela will be in attendance for 15-20 minutes of the match, he’s 91 and he doesn’t want to be outside going deaf for 2 hours in winter! Oh and don’t go trying to hang with him during the World Cup, the dude just wants to kick back and enjoy the football!

The last 3 days of tourist activity have been a bit of a laugh. It’s been fun just walking around seeing the city gradually fill up with football fans from across the globe. Brazil and England are the international teams with the biggest number of fans here at the minute. The Uruguay fans are starting to pour in now too [see photo on the right, en-route to Robben Island] as they gear up for tomorrow’s game with the French. These guys were being followed round for the day by a guy who later told me he was shooting the “other side of the World Cup” for a German magazine. Should be interesting!

I think Uruguay’s Group, A, is going to be one of the closest in the tournament where anything could happen. While South Africa and France can’t seem to score too many goals as of late, they can hold things together quite well at the back (France by tactical defending, Bafana by eh, “playing tough”). Meanwhile Uruguay and Mexico have quite prolific front-men. So how all this will play out is anyone’s guess. I think the game in Cape Town tomorrow will do a lot to determine how things end up. Or maybe we’ll just get 6 draws, and all teams finishing on 3 points and a vuvuzela and noise-o-meter competition will be needed to set them apart.

In my strangest encounter so far, I was having breakfast at 9.30 this morning on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront when I looked up and saw the one and only Ally McCoist across from me. Now, being an Irish person and a bit of a Celtic fan, I would have liked to go over and nut him one, but as it was that early hour of the morning and the poor guy was having his eggy bread I left things as they were. His companion confused me though. I think he was Jon Champion. Or maybe Tony Gubba. Basically one of those “slightly second-rate but very recognisable” voices from Match of the Day in the 1990s who has since turned up at random things on ITV and Sky. Anyone able to identify him? I think they are covering the tournament for ESPN America. And to re-enforce the weirdness of this encounter instead of being normal, saying hello and best-of-luck, I took a papparazzi style picture to post online.  Oh dear.

So don’t forget to look out for me on the tele tomorrow as France and Uruguay draw 1-1 in Green Point stadium. I’ll be the one in the crowd with the upside-down Ivory Coast flag sitting with the Uruguay fans throwing some dirty looks in the direction of the French bench where a certain Mr. Henry is likely to be sitting. Unless Aristotle Domenech’s recent 4-3-3 antics has all been a ruse…

Anyway, it’s back to the madness with me. In the meantime, here’s a bit of a slideshow i made last night of the first few “walking around lots” days, pre-World Cup 2010. [click here for full-size images]

Cape Town is, eh, “ready” for the World Cup

I mean with 96 hours to go you’d kind of hope that they were on top of things…

South Africa is world-renowned for being ridiculously disorganised and dangerous. Happy to report that so far there’s little evidence of either so far. Whether it’s a result of the FIFA-funded infrastructure and organisation that was steam-rolled into the country 6 years ago or not, all has been made quite easy for myself and any other travellers I’ve encountered so far.

When I got off the plane in Cape Town International airport I had match tickets, South African sim card and car rental sorted out within half an hour. And that was with me operating at about 22.61% productivity after 22 hours of connecting flights via Abu Dhabi and Jo’burg. So good work FIFA! Though this does not put them into the clear for not introducing the video technology that could have seen Ireland at this World Cup. But hey, after beating Algeria and Paraguay we’re over that now, right?

So anyway, the Etihad Airways experience was a lot of fun. Their cabin crew all wear half head scarves that cover one side of their heads meaning they look a bit like Jack Bauer went ape-shit again and bit off an ear off every crew member.

I chose to watch Speed as my in-flight movie in tribute to the man who did crazy preeeeetty well, Dennis Hopper. It was an amusing airplane friendly edit which meant any non-PG references to alcohol, sex or drugs were edited out. Knowing the film inside out rendered this a novelty instead of an annoyance. “Frick you Jaaaack!”.

Reading the city’s daily evening paper “Cape Argus”, you really do get a real sense just how much this means to the country.  The first 9 or 10 pages of today’s paper were all devoted to coverage of the tournament. My favourite headline was “motorway link completed just in time for finals”. The local authorities had worked double time over the last month in order to get an essential part of city’s roadway open in time for the influx of travellers. And they just about made it, with the official opening coming yesterday just 5 days before the first game of the finals. Cutting it fine. Nice. And oh look, today they’ve decided to give the city a bit of a sweep, lovely.

In the taxi on the way from the airport I passed 6 or 7 schools and each one of them saw scores of kids running around kicking a football. While it’s been well documented how important the Pienaar and Mandela’s double act before the 1995 Rugby World Cup was, rugby is not, and never could be, the game of the people.

The city is gripped by “soccer fever”, with everyone in bars, restaurants and shops so gripped by this intangible excitement that it’s impossible to be cynical. In our footballing culture of Super Sunday 3D and 24 hour rolling coverage of Premier League press conferences repeats, it’s nice to see the game here dominated by the fans and the experience with the managers and players taking a supporting role.  If Bafana can continue their recent run of good form, and somehow qualify for the second round, the lift it would bring to everybody here is impossible to imagine.

The funny thing is before I came here I went through all the groups trying to work out how things would play out and I had Mexico and France to get out of Group A with South Africa being the whipping boys of the group. But something tells me this could end up being one of the closest ones to call. Uruguay have the incredibly prolific front-line of Forlan & Suarez, while Manchester United’s new signing Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez seems unable to stop scoring for Mexico. Meanwhile a French striker hasn’t scored for the tactically challenged national team since Nicolas Anelka’s strike against Ireland in Croke Park last November.

With the deafening drone of 80,000 vuvuzelas behind them, maybe Bafana can somehow cobble together a few results and find themselves playing against Argentina or South Korea in the second round. Most would admit it’s unlikely but quite a few people round these parts really do dare to dream, and that enthusiasm is quite catchy…

Anyway, with 3 days until the first of my games actually kick off, I best pretend to be a tourist. I’m off to check out Table Mountain, better be good!
